1840 Heads of Household

"Santa Rosa" County Census:

Escambia County, East of

Escambia River and Bay of Pensacola

by Sheila L. Martin

Published in West Florida Footprints #7 1988

Researchers working on Northwest Florida have been stymied by a lack of documentary proof of their ancestors'presence in the area of Santa Rosa County, prior to Statehood, 1845. The courthouse records for Santa Rosa County between 1842 (the year Santa Rosa County was established) and 1869 were lost when the courthouse burned. But for those researchers working on Santa Rosa pioneers, this list may be a previously unpublished treasure!

An examination of the 1840 Escambia County, Florida, U. S. Census clearly reveals the names of Heads of Household in the area which would in only two more years be known as Santa Rosa County.

The 1840 Census of Escambia County, Florida, is separated into two enumerations - one for those families living West of Escmbia River and the other for those living East of Escambia River. It has long been known that Santa Rosa County was taken out of the easternmost part of Escambia County (one of Florida's original counties). But until now, many researchers may not have noticed the separation. J. C. Allen is the enumerator for this eastern portion of Escambia County. Escambia River is still the western boundary of Santa Rosa County. The following are the Heads of Household listed in the 1840 Census for eastern Escambia County, Florida, which will adequately substitute for the 1840 Santa Rosa County census:
